Active theme

Learn how to export your Shopify published theme with Duplify.

Your published theme is the live theme currently displayed on your online store. It can be a custom theme, a third-party theme from the Shopify Theme Store, or one of Shopify’s free themes.

With Duplify, you can export your published theme and all associated files, allowing you to quickly duplicate or back up your store’s design and settings.

Exporting a published theme

When you select the Active theme option in Duplify:

  • The live theme from your source store is exported to your destination stores.

  • All theme files and customizations are included.

  • You can choose to make the exported theme live immediately or save it as a draft in your destination store.

Unpublished themes

To export unpublished themes, publish and export each one individually. Even if your plan supports multiple theme exports, Duplify can only export one active (published) theme at a time.

Export options

  • Theme editor images: Include all images and media associated with the theme.

  • Set theme state: After export, Duplify can automatically set the theme as the active (live) theme or save it as a draft for review before publishing.

  • Third-party themes: Paid themes require separate licensing for each store. After export, reinstall or activate the theme through the Shopify Theme Store to apply a valid license.

  • Third-party apps: Content managed by third-party apps is not exported due to Shopify platform limitations.

Export Events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file.

Published theme export events

  • The active theme counts as one export event.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our Export events reference guide.
