# Duplify Help Center

Learn how the Duplify app can help you copy data from your stores and keep them in sync.

Duplify helps you copy and sync data between your Shopify stores. You can use it to migrate data when opening a new store, setting up a staging or test environment, or keeping multiple stores in sync.

With Duplify, you can select the data that you want to export like products, collections, pages, theme configurations, and more, and transfer it to one or multiple destination stores. You can also enable auto-sync to automatically update products and collections across connected stores as you work.

***

## Common use cases

Duplify is commonly used to:

* Set up a staging or sandbox store for testing
* Expand into new regions or markets
* Duplicate stores for franchises or wholesale channels
* Transfer or back up store data
* Sell or replicate a store

## Data you can export

You can export:

* Products and collections
* Metafields and metaobjects
* Navigation and redirects
* Customers and orders
* Pages, blogs, and content files
* Published themes and images

After export, auto-sync can be used to keep selected products and collections updated automatically across destination stores.

## How it works

Exports are based on [**export events**](/using-duplify/export-events), which represent individual data items or files. Each plan includes a set number of export events per export job. Choosing more items for export may require a higher plan tier. You can manage which items are included to fit your plan.

You can export from a single source store to multiple destination stores. Only the source store requires a Duplify license. Destination stores don’t need a separate subscription.

# Pricing and plans

Learn about Duplify's pricing and tiered plan options.

To use Duplify, your plan is based on the items you choose to export. When you create your first export, the appropriate plan for your selected export is displayed. Plan tiers are based on the total number of [export events](/using-duplify/export-events) per export job.

You only need to pay for Duplify on your source store, even if you install the app on multiple destination stores. Exports to multiple destination stores are included in the source store’s plan at no extra cost.

Plan pricing is based on the number of export events you use. [Learn more about export events.](/using-duplify/export-events)

{% hint style="success" %}
**Note**

You only pay for your Duplify subscription on your **source** store.

# Connecting stores

Learn how to link your source and destination stores for exporting with Duplify.

When you want to perform an export from one store to another with Duplify, you first need to connect your stores. It's important to understand the terminology for which store is which:<br>

* **Source store**: The store where your data currently exists. This is the store you want to export from.
* **Destination store**: The store where you want the data copied to. This is the target store.

To connect your stores, you copy a unique [**store key**](/using-duplify/connecting-stores/your-store-key) from the destination store and paste it into the export flow in the source store. This process links the two stores and allows Duplify to transfer data securely.

This guide walks you through the steps in detail, making it easy to connect stores correctly and avoid errors.

Learn how to link your **source store** and **destination store** in Duplify so you can export data between them.

### Before you start

* Make sure Duplify is installed on both your source and destination stores.
* Open **both stores in separate browser tabs**: one for the source store and one for the destination store.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip**

Destination and source store terminology is important to understand for a successful export. Review the definitions before you start:

* **Destination store**: The store where you want the data copied to. This is the target store.
* **Source store**: The store where your data currently exists. This is the store you want to export from.
  {% endhint %}

### Step 1: Prepare the destination store

1. Switch to the **destination store** tab.
2. From the Duplify dashboard, under **New store connection**, click **Destination store (import data)**.
3. Under **This store's key**, click **Copy** beside the key.

### Step 2: Configure the source store

1. Switch to the **source store tab**.
2. From the Duplify dashboard, under **New store connection**, click **Source store (export data)**.
3. Under **Destination store’s key**, paste the store key into the appropriate field.

## Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble connecting your stores, then try the following tips:

#### Verify the destination store

If the store key is correct, the store key field turns purple and the **Connect** button becomes clickable.&#x20;

#### Common connection errors

If you see an error during the connection process:

1. **Copy the correct store key** from the **destination store**. Do not use the source store key.
2. **Check for extra spaces** in the store key field. Remove any spaces at the beginning or end.
3. If the error persists, contact Duplify Support via the chat widget in the bottom-right corner of the app page.

# Your store key

Learn about the store key used to connect stores in Duplify.

Your store key is a unique code that connects your source store (where the data comes from) to your destination store (where the data is copied to).

When creating a store connection, you need to copy the store key from the destination store and enter it in the source store during the export setup process. This allows Duplify to securely connect the two stores and transfer data between them.

## Find your store key

1. From the Duplify dashboard in your destination store, go to **New store connection.**
2. Click **Destination store (import data).**
3. Click **Copy** to copy the store key for that store.

Now you can paste the key into source store to continue setup.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip**

You always copy the store key from the destination store and paste it into the source store.
{% endhint %}

2. Beside each category you want to sync, switch the toggle to on.
3. Optional: Under each sync item, check or uncheck the fields that you want to keep updated.

When exporting orders with Duplify, some order details may not be fully supported or may appear differently in the destination store. This is due to how Shopify handles certain data, such as refunds, fulfillment states, and third-party customizations.

* **Refunds**: Refunded or partially refunded orders are exported, but refund amounts aren’t recreated, so totals may differ.
* **Fulfillment status**: Orders with statuses like `In progress` or `On hold` are exported as `Unfulfilled`.
* **Subscriptions**: Subscription orders are exported, but ongoing subscription details (like billing schedules) aren’t exported.
* **Payment status (Due)**: Orders with a “due” payment status are exported without that status. Because the final balance hasn’t been settled, totals may differ in the destination store.
* **VAT:** Orders with VAT taxes don't have the VAT data exported.
* **Tracking numbers/links:** Order's tracking numbers and tracking links are not exported.&#x20;
* **Shipping discounts**: Partial shipping discounts created by third-party apps aren’t included. Fully free shipping is supported. Orders are exported without these discounts.
* **Duties and import taxes**: Duties aren’t included in exported orders. The duty amount shows as an amount owed back to customer in the destination store.
* **Transaction IDs**: Payment transaction IDs aren’t exported for security reasons.

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file.

#### Order export events

* Each order exported counts as one export event.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our [Export Events](/using-duplify/export-events) reference guide.

# Content files

Options for exporting Shopify content files with Duplify

Duplify exports all files uploaded to your Shopify admin's **Content** > **Files**, including media such as images and videos used across your store. This allows you to move or back up all media assets without manually downloading and re-uploading them.

***

## Exporting content files

When you select the **Content files** option in Duplify:

* All media files from your source store are exported to your destination stores.
* This includes images and videos used in theme sections, blog posts, pages, product and collection descriptions, downloadable files for customers, and files linked to metafields.

#### Example

If your store has images in a blog post, promotional banner videos in the theme, and downloadable PDFs for customers, exporting content files with Duplify will transfer all of these assets to your destination store.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file.

#### Content file export events

* Each file exported counts as **one export event**.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our [Export events](/using-duplify/export-events) reference guide.

# Themes

Learn how to export theme configuration from your source store to a destination store with Duplify.

Duplify lets you export the configuration of a theme from your source store to a theme on your destination store.&#x20;

To transfer theme configuration, the theme needs to already be installed on your destination store as a draft.&#x20;

If the source theme is a paid theme, then the same theme needs to be installed and licensed on the destination store. Free themes can sync configuration to any draft theme on the destination store.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Caution**

Exporting a theme configuration overwrites all files on the selected destination theme. Make sure you select a draft theme on the destination store. Your current live theme can't be selected as the destination.
{% endhint %}

* [Exporting theme configuration](#exporting-theme-configuration)
  * [Export options](#export-options)
  * [Theme export limitations](#theme-export-limitations)
* [Export events](#export-events)

***

## Before you start

Before exporting theme configuration, make sure:

* The theme you want to export is installed on your source store.
* The destination theme is installed as a draft (not your live theme). Trial themes can't be used as a destination.&#x20;
* If the source theme is a paid theme, then the same theme needs to be installed and licensed on the destination store. Purchase a license through the [Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/) before proceeding.&#x20;
* If the source theme is a free theme, then you can sync its configuration to any draft theme on the destination store.

## Exporting theme configuration

When you select Themes in the export flow, you'll choose a theme from your source store and a theme from your destination store. Duplify then exports all configuration and files from the source theme to the destination theme.

Because this process overwrites the destination theme's files, only draft themes are available to select as the destination. Your current live theme is excluded to prevent disruption to your store.

#### Export options

* **Theme editor images**: Include all images and media associated with the theme.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Third-party apps**

Content managed by third-party apps is not exported due to Shopify platform limitations.
{% endhint %}

### Theme export limitations

Shopify enforces the following limitations:

* Maximum asset limit of 1,000 individual files per theme.
* Maximum ZIP upload size of 50 MB per theme file.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file.

* If you export multiple themes in a single export, each theme is counted separately.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our [Export events](/using-duplify/export-events) reference guide.

# Navigation menus

Learn how to export Shopify navigation menus with Duplify.

Duplify exports all navigation menus from your source store, including each menu and nested menu item. This saves time recreating menus manually, especially complex nested structures, by transferring all menus, menu items, and handles directly to your destination stores.

***

## Exporting navigation menus

When you select the **Navigation menus** option in Duplify:

* All menus from your source store are exported to your destination stores.
* Each export includes the full structure of each menu, including nested menu items and handles.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note**

Menu items that link to unavailable pages in the destination store will return a 404 error.
{% endhint %}

### Options <a href="#options" id="options"></a>

* **Export behavior**: When matching navigation menus exist in the destination store, choose to create new menus, update existing ones, or ignore them.

#### Example

If your store has a main menu with categories like “Men,” “Women,” and “Sale,” each containing subcategories, exporting navigation menus with Duplify will preserve all items and submenus in the same structure in your destination stores.&#x20;

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Navigation menu export events

* Each menu exported counts as one export event, regardless of the number of nested items.

For more details on export events across Duplify, see our [Export events](/using-duplify/export-events) reference guide.

# Pages

Learn how to export Shopify pages with Duplify.

Duplify exports all pages from your source store to your destination stores, including their content, layout, and SEO settings. This ensures your store pages, such as About, Contact, or FAQ, are fully replicated without needing to rebuild them manually.

***

## Exporting pages

When you select the **Pages** option in Duplify:

* All pages from your source store are exported to your destination stores.
* Each export includes the page’s complete content, including markup, text formatting, images, videos, and SEO information.

#### Example

If your store includes an “About Us” page with formatted text, embedded videos, and optimized SEO, exporting pages with Duplify copies all of this content to your destination stores.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Page export events

* Each page exported counts as one export event, regardless of content length or media.

For more details on export events across Duplify, see our [Export events reference guide](/using-duplify/export-events).

# Blogs and posts

Learn how to export Shopify blogs and posts with Duplify.

Shopify blogs are collections of articles you create to share updates, stories, or other content with your audience. Each blog post can include text, images, formatting, tags, author information, and SEO settings. Exporting blogs ensures that all your content and associated metadata can be moved to other stores.

***

## Exporting blogs and posts

When you select the Blogs option in Duplify:

* All blogs and their posts are exported to your destination store.
* Each export includes the full content of the post, including formatting, images, tags, author, excerpt, blog category, and SEO information.
* You can also choose to export associated metafields and metaobjects using the checkboxes for individual blog posts.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Blog post export events

* Each blog post exported counts as one export event, regardless of content length or number of images.

For more details on export events across Duplify, see our [Export events reference guide](/using-duplify/export-events).

# Redirects

Options for exporting Shopify redirects with Duplify

Shopify redirects let you guide visitors from one URL to another. They are especially useful when you change a page’s URL, ensuring that users and search engines can still reach the correct page. Redirects help maintain smooth navigation on your store and prevent broken links after updates or renames.

You can manage redirects in Shopify under **Online Store > Navigation** by selecting **View URL redirects**.

***

## Exporting redirects

When you select the Redirects option in Duplify:

* All redirects from your source store are exported to your destination stores.
* Redirects are exported as complete items, not individually by URL.

### Redirects example

If you rename a product page from `/old-tshirt` to `/new-tshirt`, it creates a redirect so visitors using the old URL are automatically sent to the new page.

* Exporting redirects with Duplify move this redirect to your other stores, ensuring the old URL still works everywhere.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Redirects export events

* Redirects export with unlimited events.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our [Export events reference guide](/using-duplify/export-events).

# Shop metafields

Learn how to export shop metafields with Duplify.

Shop metafields are custom fields that let you store additional structured information in your Shopify store. Each metafield definition acts as a template that specifies:

* Which part of your store it applies to (for example, product, collection, customer)
* What type of data it can hold (for example, text, number, file, URL)

You can manage shop metafields in the Shopify admin under **Settings > Custom data**.

***

## Exporting shop metafields

When you select the **Shop metafields** option in Duplify:

* Metafield definitions are exported from your source store to your destination stores.
* This export focuses on the definitions, not the values stored in them.

To export the values, select the individual shop metafield options for products, collections, customers, orders, or blog posts.

### Example

You might create a product metafield definition called **upsell**:

* **Name**: `upsell`
* **Description**: Upsell products
* **Applies to**: Products

Once defined, you can assign values to this metafield. For example, for a product called “T-shirt”, the upsell value might be “Jeans, Jacket” (the recommended products to upsell).

* **Definition export**: The `upsell` metafield itself is exported when you choose shop metafields.
* **Values export**: The specific upsell links (Jeans, Jacket) are exported when you also select Products.

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Shop metafield export events

* Shop metafield definitions export with unlimited events.
* Values associated with shop metafields still follow the standard export event rules for their respective categories.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, visit our [Export events](#export-events) reference guide.

# Metaobjects

Learn how to export metaobjects with Duplify.

Metaobjects let you store structured information in your Shopify store. They group related metafields together, making it easier to manage complex data that isn’t covered by standard Shopify categories.

Common use cases include:

* Product attributes not supported by standard fields
* Custom collections of data like colors, materials, or specifications

Metaobjects are found under **Content** in the Shopify admin.

***

## Exporting metaobjects

Duplify exports all metaobject definitions that you created in your source store.

* Definitions contain the primary structure for your data.
* Values within metaobjects (e.g., images, color codes, text) are exported separately under related categories like Products, Collections, Customers, Orders, or Blog posts.
* A metaobject export focuses on the definitions, not the associated data.

### Example

Metaobject for colors might include:

* images
* base color names
* patterns
* HEX codes
* image handles

Each of these fields is part of the metaobject definition exported by Duplify.

The following metaobject `Color` holds data about colors. It shows two entries.

<figure><img src="/files/9MvQp3OJ0Fq1bv4uQfRZ" alt=""><figcaption><p>Metaobject for Color with individual entries</p></figcaption></figure>

***

## Export events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file. Your plan provides a specific number of monthly export events.

#### Metaobject export events

* Metaobject definitions export with unlimited events.
* You don’t need to track metaobject definitions against your monthly export events.
* Metaobject entries still follow the standard export event rules under their related categories.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, visit our [Export events](#export-events) reference guide.

# Export events

Learn how export events work in Duplify, including tracking, limits, and auto-sync usage.

Every item you export with Duplify, whether it’s a product, collection, order, or theme, counts as an **export event**.&#x20;

Export events are the unit of measurement that determine how much data you can transfer to your destination store per each export job. Your plan includes a set number of events for job, and if you exceed that limit, additional charges apply.&#x20;

By understanding how events are counted, you can better plan exports, avoid additional charges, and choose the plan that fits your store’s needs.

***

## Understanding export events

Duplify calculates the size of your source store’s export by tracking export events. Each event represents a single data item or file.

* **One item exported = 1 export event.**
* Your plan includes a fixed number of export events each export job.
* If you hit your export event limit, then you're prompted to upgrade your plan to export more.
* Your balance resets every 30 days based on your plan tier.

Visit our [pricing page](/getting-started/pricing-and-plans) to review the available different tiers.

***

## **Tracking export events**

When selecting items to export, the total events for each category appears in the right-hand column. Duplify also displays the estimated total based on your selections.

On the Duplify app dashboard page, you can track how many events you’ve used. This number resets every 30 days with your billing cycle.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip**

One item exported is one export event.
{% endhint %}

<table><thead><tr><th width="186.0062255859375">Export category</th><th width="213.590087890625">Export amount</th><th>Export events</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Products</td><td>1 product</td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Collections</td><td>1 collection</td><td>1 export event<br>+ Products (required)</td></tr><tr><td>Customers</td><td>1 customer </td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Orders</td><td>1 order </td><td>1 export event + Products and Customers (required)</td></tr><tr><td>Content files</td><td>1 file </td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Published theme</td><td>1 active theme </td><td>1 export event + Theme editor images/content files (Optional)</td></tr><tr><td>Navigation menus</td><td>1 menu </td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Pages</td><td>1 page</td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Blogs and posts</td><td>1 blog post </td><td>1 export event</td></tr><tr><td>Redirects</td><td>All redirects </td><td>Unlimited</td></tr><tr><td>Shop Metafields</td><td>All definitions and values</td><td>Unlimited</td></tr><tr><td>Metaobjects</td><td>All definitions and values</td><td>Unlimited</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Auto-sync export events

After the initial export, auto-sync also uses export events. Any change in the source store triggers an event that updates the destination store if it's set to auto-sync.

When a new product is created in the source store, the destination store automatically receives it with all details, including images, prices, and descriptions. This action initiates an export event.

| Auto-sync category | Amount            | Export event   |
| ------------------ | ----------------- | -------------- |
| Products           | 1 product sync    | 1 export event |
| Collections        | 1 collection sync | 1 export event |

# Auto-syncing

Learn how to use auto-sync in Duplify to keep products and collections up to date across stores.

Duplify can automatically keep your duplicate store up to date with changes from your source store. This ensures your items stay updated without needing to run additional exports each time something changes.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note**

Auto-sync is one-way only. Changes made in the source store are pushed to destination stores. Manual changes in destination stores do not sync back to the source store.

# Export limitations

Learn about the limitations of exporting data with Duplify.

Duplify uses Shopify’s Export API to copy data from a source store to one or more destination stores. While most data can be exported, there are some limitations. Review these in advance to ensure your exports run smoothly.

## In this section:

* [Third-party apps](#third-party-apps)
* [Shopify Settings](#shopify-settings)
* [Customer accounts](#customer-accounts)
* [Licenses for themes](#licenses-for-themes)

***

## Third-party apps

Apps installed from the Shopify App Store are separate in each store. After exporting, you need to reinstall third-party apps on each destination store and repurchase any paid apps. These apps are created by different developers and are not included in the Shopify Export API.

***

## Shopify Settings

Shopify's Export API currently only allows for custom data (metafields) to be exported from the Shopify Settings.&#x20;

Settings that are not available for export include:

* **Store information -** Store contact information, legal business name, and address
* **Store currency** - Settings for the default store currency
* **Weight units -** Default weight units for shipping
* **Staff accounts -** Accounts to manage permissions to access different areas of your store
* **Payments** - Methods of payment used for selling in the store

These settings need to be configured manually in each destination store.

***

## Customer accounts

Customer accounts can't be exported with Duplify. Customers need to create accounts again in the destination store, as login credentials can't be transferred for privacy and security reasons.

***

## Licenses for themes

Duplify exports theme configuration only. It **doesn't** **transfer** the theme license. Any paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store requires a valid license on each store where it's used.

Before exporting theme configuration for a paid theme, make sure the theme is installed and licensed on your destination store. You can't export a theme configuration if a matching licensed theme isn't found. A license can be used on the destination store even if the theme version differs from the original.

To get a license on your destination store, you can transfer your existing license by contacting Shopify Support, or purchase a new license through the Shopify Theme Store.

# Tracking exports

Learn how you can track or cancel an export that's in progress.

Duplify runs all exports in the background. You can close the tab and continue working on other tasks while the export completes.&#x20;

Duplify sends an email notification when your export is finished.

{% hint style="warning" %}

## Monitoring export progress

You can check the status of an export in progress. A number in the bottom-right corner of the status tracker shows how many items have been exported.

The progress bar provides a visual representation of your export status, helping you track completion at a glance.

***

## Handling errors

Errors can occur if files in your source store are changed while an export is in progress. Changes can be made manually or by third-party apps. Any modifications during export may disrupt the process.

### Getting support

Duplify is automatically notified when an error occurs. If you need assistance, contact our support team using the Chat widget at the bottom of the Duplify screen.

### Canceling an export

You can cancel an export while it’s running. From the dashboard under In progess, click the trash can icon at the bottom and confirm your action.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Note**

Exports already sent to the destination store can't be undone. You can manually delete any items that have already been exported after you cancel an export in progress.
{% endhint %}

Duplify automatically creates backups of your store data every week after the initial setup. Each backup is securely stored on a cloud server, and you can view, compare, or restore an older version at any time.

You can:

* View your backup history by category
* Compare versions to see what’s changed
* Restore a previous version of a product, page, or theme configuration

All backups run securely on Shopify’s backend to ensure reliability and performance.

***

## Backups data retention

All backups are stored securely on a private cloud server.

Backups aren't publicly accessible. They can only be retrieved through a temporary, secure link, so your store data stays protected and restores stay simple.

### Timeframe

Each backup is retained for 6 months while you're using the Duplify app.

If you uninstall the app or cancel your plan, your data is kept for an additional 30 days before being permanently deleted.

# Creating a backup

Learn how to create your first backup, and how you can trigger backups later.

Before Duplify can start creating your automatic weekly backups, you need to run your first backup. This initial backup captures your products, themes, and pages so Duplify has a starting point to work from.&#x20;

The process only takes a few minutes, depending on your store size, and once it’s done, your weekly backups run automatically in the background.

2. Click **Backup now**.

The backup begins, and you can review the backup when it's finished.

# Backing up a different store

Learn how to back up a store other than your current store with your existing Duplify plan.

You can create backups for a different connected store than the one you’re currently viewing. This is useful when you export data between stores (for example, from a development store to a production store) and need to back up the destination store instead of the source store.

To use this feature, at least one of the connected stores must have an active Duplify plan. A single active subscription can be used to run backups for one store at a time.

## Back up a different store

If you want to back up a store that you haven't connected to this Duplify store yet, then before you start, [find the store key](/using-duplify/connecting-stores/your-store-key) for the store you want to back up.

**Steps:**

1. From the Duplify app menu, go to **Backups**.
2. Click **Back up a different store**.
3. Choose one of the following store backup options:
   1. **Connected store**: Use a store you've already connected to this account for your backup.
   2. **Store key**: Connect a new store using a store key for your backup.
4. After you've selected a previously connected store from the list, or connected a new one with a store key, click **Continue**.
5. Click **Go to store** to continue setting up the backup.
6. Continue with the export steps as per the instructions in [Set up your first backup](/backups/creating-a-backup#set-up-your-first-backup).

You'll manage your backups in the store that you connected.&#x20;

# Restoring a backup

Learn how to restore products, pages, or themes from your Duplify backups and roll back to a previous version when needed.

You can use Duplify to restore older versions of your products, pages, or themes whenever you need to undo changes or recover previous content.&#x20;

From the Backups page, you can browse past versions, preview what’s included, and choose how you want to restore.

***

## Restore a previous version

You can restore a product, page, or theme from a previous backup.

1. From the **Backups** page, click a category you want to restore from (for example, Products or Themes).
2. Select the item you want to restore.
3. Review the available versions.
4. Click **Restore** beside the version you want.
5. Optional: Depending on the item, you may need to choose a [restore option](#restore-options).

#### Restore options

Depending on the item type, you may have to choose a restore option:

* **Create new**: keep the current version and save this backup as a new draft
* **Update**: replace the current version with this backup
* **As a draft** (for themes): restore the backup as an unpublished theme
* **Publish** (for themes)*:* replace the current live theme with this version

A confirmation message appears before restoring.

{% hint style="success" %}

#### Tips

* Review your changes before restoring. Restoring overwrites the current version if you have set it to **Update**.
* Backups can be created and restored any time while your Duplify subscription is active.

### Overview

<details>

<summary>What is Duplify?</summary>

Duplify is a Shopify app that lets you duplicate your store’s data from one store to another. It supports a wide range of data types, making it easier to create backups, test environments, or duplicate stores for expansion.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why use Duplify?</summary>

Duplify helps you streamline store duplication tasks. Common use cases include:

* Creating staging or sandbox environments
* Supporting franchising or international expansion
* Selling a store
* Managing wholesale operations
* Backing up your store

</details>

### Exporting

<details>

<summary>What can I export with Duplify?</summary>

You can export the following data from a source store to a destination store:

* Products and collections
* Customers and orders
* Pages, blog posts, and content files
* Theme configuration and theme editor images
* Redirects
* Metafields and metaobjects

</details>

<details>

<summary>How many stores can I export to?</summary>

There is no limit to the number of destination stores. Each destination requires a separate export setup from the source store.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What are export events?</summary>

An export event counts as one data item or file exported. Your [plan](/getting-started/pricing-and-plans) provides a set number of export events per export job. If you exceed this limit, then additional charges may apply. Export events reset monthly based on your plan tier.

[Learn more about export events](/using-duplify/export-events).

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens if I don't use all of my export events for the month?</summary>

Unused export events do not carry over. Each month your events are replenished based on your plan tier.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What data can’t I export with Duplify?</summary>

Duplify uses Shopify’s Export API to export store data, which has some restrictions. The following data can't be exported:

* **Third-party apps:** each app needs to be reinstalled on every destination store, and paid apps need to be purchased again.
* **Most Shopify Settings:** only custom data (metafields) can be exported. Other settings like business information, currency, staff accounts, and payment methods need to be configured manually.
* **Customer accounts:** customers need to create accounts again in the destination store. Login credentials can’t be transferred for privacy reasons.
* **Paid third-party themes:** themes can be exported, but you need to purchase or apply a valid license from the Shopify Theme Store.

Learn more about [export limitations](/using-duplify/export-limitations).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I export a paid third-party theme?</summary>

Yes, with some conditions. Duplify exports theme configuration only. It doesn't transfer the theme license. Before you can export, the same theme needs to already be installed and licensed on your destination store.&#x20;

Purchase a license through the Shopify Theme Store before proceeding. A license can be used on the destination store even if the theme version differs from the original.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I export third-party apps?</summary>

No. After duplicating a store, you need to reinstall third-party apps on each destination store and repurchase any paid apps. These apps are created by different developers and are not able to be transferred.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I export order tracking numbers?</summary>

No. This feature isn't currently available on Duplify.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I export translations?</summary>

No. This feature isn't currently available on Duplify.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do all images transfer over when I export a theme?</summary>

Most theme files migrate automatically, but some images, like those uploaded via the theme editor (logos, banners, backgrounds), require enabling the **Content files** export. To ensure all images transfer correctly, export both your theme and content files.&#x20;

Images tied to Products, Pages, or Collections are included when you export those objects separately, so make sure to export both the theme and the relevant content to preserve everything.

</details>

### Billing and account

<details>

<summary>Can I just pay once for Duplify? I don't need monthly exports. </summary>

No. A monthly plan is currently required to initiate an export, but you can cancel the plan at any time.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do I need a subscription for both source and destination store?</summary>

No. Only the source store requires an active subscription. You can export to any number of destination stores at no additional subscription cost.

</details>

<details>

<summary>If I delete Duplify, will my destination store be erased?</summary>

No. If you delete the Duplify app, your source and destination (duplicate) store remain the same.&#x20;

If you set up auto-syncing in Duplify, then deleting the app stops auto-sync.

</details>

# Running a demo

Learn how to run a demo export to test out Duplify.

A demo export lets you test Duplify by transferring a small number of products from your source store to a destination store. This gives you a quick preview of how your data will be copied, so you can check results and understand the process before performing a full export.

## Before you begin

Before you start the demo, make sure you've:

* [Installed Duplify](/getting-started/installing-duplify) on both the source and destination stores.
* [Connected your stores](/using-duplify/connecting-stores) so data can be transferred.

## Running a demo

1. After you've [connected your stores](/using-duplify/connecting-stores), click **Start demo**.
2. Duplify will export 5 products from the source store to the destination store.
3. After the demo finishes, check your destination store to see the demo products.

You can proceed to a full export when you're ready.

To avoid duplicates, we automatically remove the 5 demo products from your destination store.
