Themes

Learn how to export your store themes with Duplify.

Duplify lets you export themes from your source store to one or more destination stores. You can export multiple themes at once, including unpublished themes, and choose which theme should be set as active (published) on the destination store.

You can export your themes and all associated files, allowing you to quickly duplicate or back up your store’s design and settings.

What is an active theme?

Your active theme is the live theme currently displayed on your online store. This can be a custom theme, a third-party theme from the Shopify Theme Store, or one of Shopify’s free themes.

When exporting multiple themes, only one theme can be set as active on the destination store. All other exported themes are saved as drafts.

Exporting themes

When exporting themes with Duplify, you can search for and select one or more themes from your source store. This includes both published (active) and unpublished themes.

All selected themes are exported with their associated files and customizations. During the export process, you choose which exported theme should become the active theme on the destination store.

Unpublished themes

After export, unpublished themes remain drafts on the destination store unless you choose one of them to be set as active.

Export options

  • Theme editor images: Include all images and media associated with the theme.

  • Set theme state: Choose which exported theme should be set as the active (live) theme on the destination store. All other exported themes are saved as drafts.

  • Third-party themes: Paid themes require separate licensing for each store. After export, reinstall or activate the theme through the Shopify Theme Store to apply a valid license.

  • Third-party apps: Content managed by third-party apps is not exported due to Shopify platform limitations.

Licenses for themes

Duplify can export third-party theme content, but it does not transfer the theme license. Any paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store requires a valid license on each store where it’s used. After export, the theme will appear as a trial version until a license is purchased.

You have two options:

  • Transfer your existing license to the destination store by contacting Shopify Support.

  • Purchase a new license on the destination store.

A single license can be used on the new store, even if the theme version differs from the original.

Export Events

Duplify tracks export events to determine the size of your store’s export. Each event represents one data item or file.

  • If you export multiple themes in a single export, each theme is counted separately.

For a full overview of how Duplify counts export events, see our Export events reference guide.
